Short Poems

As I gaed to Falkland to a feast,
I met me wi' an ugly beast:
Ten tails, a hunder nails,
And no a fit but ane.

Look as they rise, rise
Over the line where sky meets the earth;
Pleiades!
Lo! They ascending, come to guide us,
Leading us safely, keeping us one;
Pleiades,
Teach us to be, like you, united.

Who equallest the coward's haste
And still inspires the faintest heart
Whose lofty fame is not disgraced
Though it assume the lowest part

Wenn sich lebendig Silber neigt,
So gibt es Schnee und Regen,

In hearts like thine ne'er may I hold a place

That seat--like seats, the bane of Freedom's realm,
But dear to those presiding at the helm--
Is basely purchased, not with gold alone;
Add Conscience, too, this bargain is your own--
'Tis thine to offer with corrupting art
The rotten borough of the human heart.

Earth issues forth from Earth forcibly, reluctantly,
Then earth struts on Earth arrogantly, proudly.
And earth fashions from Earth palaces, towers, temples.
And earth founds upon the Earth legends, dogmas, laws.
Then earth gets tired of the deeds of earth, and so it weaves from Earth's own haloes ghosts, illusions, dreams.
Then Earth's drowsiness beguiles the eyelid of earth, and so earth too sleeps solemnly, soundly, eternally.

Fortune doth frown.
What remedy?
I am down

The sun lay molten in the sea
