Thoughts on Autumn (a micropoetry series)

drifting home
with the autumn leaves
colored into the earth

a spirit dream
as you walk along the lawn
all covered in leaves

this spot where
you stand, molded
like a statue
and chiseled deep
into the earth

my spirit lay
beneath the autumn wind
inside a blanket
of all your colors

thoughts like a net
woven into the fabric of the wind
to capture what little impulse
there is to escape

I stand, drunk
holding this spot for posterity
defended like the Temple
before its destruction

Torn Up (micropoetry)

between the stones
I listen for the sound

poisoned
under a tree
I hear the word
of mercy

wounded
  I sail through the darkness
    on the way
      to a lost continent

I tore myself up
from broken earth
to rise like a king
but fell, burnt out
like the dying sun

falling
into the mud
I look up into your eyes
until I see no more

  you
are a sculpture
  formed
from the lines
  of infinity
laid to rest

After Hearing the Rain

wet
with the dew
of a heavy rain—
the scent of ozone
lingering still

          *

a bird cries
somewhere in a nest—
her shattered child

          *

the gate has opened—
I walk through
looking for salvation

          *

these are the souls
who wander
the desolate streets—
I search their eyes
they do not see

Songs of a New Morning

from the shore
where I can see it all
as it floats away

to some other land
where the sun continues to shine
for centuries

and treetops
sway in the wind
filling the grass
with wandering pollen

          *

worn out
like a flag flown
for many years

          *

alone here
where your lips once
had left a mark

          *

once

Lullaby

our landscape trembles
in a storied web
worn cold with weather
whitewashed for another day

          *

the door opens and shuts
waiting for her
the immortal one and her music
played under a cloud
of the church organ
a hundred years old

          *

sun behind a cloud
piercing, transparent
folded in the leaves of grass

Together and Lost

together in time
time on a string—
friendship in notes
of what lovers bring

          *

storms and fires
eons of woods
grown over and lost
to sight in the blind
communion of one

          *

rust and battle—
armor left, foregone
on fields for others
to follow this road

          *

alone
in the constant quest
of folly foregone
in others’ arms

Another Day

far at sea
in the violent turn
of the waves and silence—
and out there somewhere
the shores of home

     *

images
built in mist—
footprints
on the journey home

     *

winds
and roots torn up—
covered in the dress
of a fallen queen

     *

one blow
and then I’m down—
fallen to
the lightless depths
between the now
of life and eternity

     *

one and then
the other—

Carry Me Home

rays melt
into the blue light
of another heaven

        *

wind washed
water melts anew
on the blue horizon

        *

birds
of another day
have joined
for morning prayers

        *

looking east
the pages turn
to the wind
where all the blind
begin to see

        *

jigsaw night
among the red and blue—
once more I'm

Thoughts on Time

the lost art
of statues and colonnades
sketched in time

         Ꚛ

stars slumber
as the sea water
that rings my feet

         Ꚛ

light mixed in shade
between the leaves
that line my feet

         Ꚛ

centuries old
as leaves whisper
on New England stone

         Ꚛ

another day
she wanders on
without a name
