A Hard Saying

Unselfish love, which would true aims fulfil,
Must be what men call mean, must make unask'd
The first advances, and a cold response,
Rebuffs and misconceptions overlook,
To prosecute its end, which is to give,
For love's best reasons, unrequited, all
Love's heart and life's devotion.

This confess'd,
Some brief indulgence let the heart enjoy—
From thought set free, from all the weary weight
Of those great ends whereto, since early days
Elected, souls must strive and, striving, see

Taking the Veil

Folds of flesh henceforth enwind thee,
Earthly veils thy form conceal,
Five restricted senses bind thee—
Dimly wails our vain appeal.

Wings of those that loved and knew thee
Round about thy house may throng,
But the charm of earth which drew thee
Holds thee by a spell too strong.

Soul of sweetness, thus forsaking
True life's light and love divine,
When the witch-spell fails, awaking—
Light and life and love be thine.

So the walls of sense entomb thee,
So we leave thee—born of men;

High and Low

Upon the heights they rested; looking down,
" What shuddering depths, " she said, " thank God, afar! "
But he: " 'Twas thence we climbed to reach the crown;
O Love, I bless what brought us where we are. "

Upon a blessed shower from heaven after a drowth

Upon a blessed shower from heaven after a drowth

When the eternall hand of love
Opens it self above
In any showre of temprall good
What should be understood
But scripture thence
Of true Obedience.
And that vild Clay
Should Powres Obey
And in a thankfullnes for what is guiven
Exalt the Doners prayse, look up to heaven.

Fear wayts on those who doe Loves stings approve
Time swallows All things, let's then yeild to Love
Shall my Ears tingle stil and n'ere reply
Oft did the Chaugh proclayme my Desteny
From th'hollow willow that at Home I had
A father kind but wife was very bad
I married am and doe bemone my Fates
Yet Comfort 'tis t'have some Assotiates.

Loves Affirmative

Loves Affirmative

Yes, wher less Virtue shines
To Venerate fond Venus shrines
Ther is the greater neede
Of beauties Charme to doe the deede
Else twere a geer
As if to love a thing that were not ther
When faire or good
Or both in all affections Understood
And as a supplement defects to smother
The one is rais'd by'th'setting of the other.

Yes, I agree that soules may place
Their mutuall simpathizing grace
Shot from each hart through eyes

The Attributes of true love

The attributes of true love

We call that patience, when provoakt we can
Deferr revenge but 'tis True Love in Man
And when wich open hand we would express
Our bounties Tribut some stil't Lavishnes
But they Mistake as far as those despise
All steps wherby another man doth rise
Yet think they have Love too, and boast noe less
Than that She is their constant Patrones:

Love begetts Fear

Love begetts Fear

'Twas of thy goodnes (Lord) I had
Knowledg of what was good, what bad
Yet through the ill of nature blind
I followd Sin and leaft thy fear behind
Soe forfaited a Blessing; till
Thou of thy free and gratious will
Sign'dst me a pardon in that stile, repent
And soe eschew all punnishment
Thus then awakend, I began
Thy Judgments, Blessings, Love, and fear to scan
And in a scoal when I them all had waighd
Methought I lov'd (Thee) still, still was afraid.

My tryall and araignment at loves second barr

My tryall and araignment at loves second barr

Why did not some when first I undertook
This task of Love again, guive me my book
The crime is not soe hainous to deprive
Me of my clergy, though again I wive:
My years alow it, and those cannot stay
But each reprive's as bad as cast away
I did confess at first, soe hoapt to find
A salm of mercy but the Judg unkind
Turnd me to such a leaf and line in Her
That the Caldayck is a caracter
Of more facilety and th'Arab scrall
When pointed (by much) more methodicall
