Remnants of a battle Lay smeared across the field – Snowballs splattered against The towering walls of fortresses Now crumbling beneath the weight Of the afternoon sun. Footprints dash across the lawn, Scattered chaotically in all directions, Searching for cover From the white grenades Raining down upon hat-covered heads. A nearby tree is caked with icy shrapnel And conceals a coral mitten Abandoned by its owner In the heat of the fight. The evergreen shivers And drops a lump of powder Over the wool, Claiming the casualty as its own. The sun creeps beneath the trees on the horizon And the trampled field hardens to ice As a blue shadow coats over it. The remnants of the battle lay still, Waiting in anticipation Of the war that tomorrow’s sunrise will bring.
