Wang Wei (701-761)

王維

Living in Leisure at the Wang River:

A Gift for Scholar Pei Di

輞川閑居

贈裴秀才迪

A chilly mountain,

walking about the verdant green:

寒山

轉蒼翠

Autumn waters,

the sun, a trickling stream.

秋水

日潺湲

Leaning on my cane,

the wooden gate outside,

倚杖

柴門外

Facing the wind,

and listening to cicadas at dusk.

臨風

聽暮蟬

On the ferry pier,

a remnant sun is setting

渡頭

餘落日

And from the village,

a solitary smoke is rising.

墟里

上孤煙

Remembering our time here,

you were drunk, like the mad man of Chu,

復值

接輿醉

And I was singing wildly,

like the poet Tao of Jin.

狂歌

五柳前

Notes:

1.    Background: Gangchuan is the place where Wang Wei lived a secluded life. It’s said he spent over thirty years there.
