What success truly means
Is so much more than it seems.
You grind, cheat for supposed fame
But after all, you are just a name.
Just a face amongst so many
Who, to take the bill, toss the penny.
You gave up the love that loved you most
To sit with strange men, and boast
Of vaults of riches and empty halls.
You are no king; but prisoner within walls
You see and hear but cannot so feel
And the game goes on like a vicious wheel.
You own men and they will do their job
But when lifeless you lie they will not sob.
Then, from up there, when you look through
You find the world is just as fine without you.
You’ll see your empire being handed over
To a son, just as vain as his old father.
The man you see now, is successful too
He has killed the innocent boy you knew.
He is you and you are him
The light within is growing dim.
And as always it is far too late
To go back and alter your horrid fate.
You wish you left the bill to keep the penny
Kept your love and saved hope for many.
