Male and female peaks

Falls the Minano River—

Gathering, like my passion,

In a deep pool.

筑波嶺の

峰より落つる

みなの川

恋ぞつもりて

Koi zo tsumorite

Fuchi to nari nuru

Note: When “Minano” is written in kanji, its characters are 男女, meaning man-woman, so named because the river's source is Tsukuba's twin peaks, which reminded people of a man and a woman.
