Early in the ninth month I went back to my birthplace; the day lilies of the north hall had died off in the frost, now with no trace left. Everything had changed from the past; my siblings had white hair on their temples, wrinkles on their brows. We could say no more than, " We are alive. " My brother opened his amulet and said, " Look at mother's white hair. Urashima's comb box — your eyebrows have grown old, too. " He wept for a while:

The sky in the middle of the fourth month was still hazy, and the moon of the fleeting short night quite alluring, the mountains dark with young leaves. It was time for cuckoos to appear, calling, when the eastern clouds began to turn white beyond the sea:

Wanting to see the " first snow " at my grass hut, whenever I was elsewhere and the sky became cloudy, I would hurry home — I did it so many times. But one twelfth month, on the eighth, for the first time it snowed [while I was home], and I was overjoyed:
