The White Cottage

The cottage has a fresh clean coat of limewash,
And walls and roof, that, but the other day,
Were weathered grubby grey,
Flash white as marble in the summer moonshine.

Seth took a half-day off before his wedding,
To wash the old stones of his new home white
For Eleanor's delight,
And bridal-white they gleam in summer moonshine:

And on the first white night of life together
By their own hearthstone, warm the windows glow
In walls of glistering snow,
And mingle firelight gold with silver moonshine
