My own beloved, adopted town!
Even this glimpse of thee,
Whereon I've seen the sun go down
So oft — suffices me.
For more than forty chequer'd years
Hast thou not been my home?
Till all that most this life endears
Forbids a wish to roam.
I came to thee a stranger youth,
Unknowing and unknown;
And Friendship's solace, and Love's truth,
In thee have been mine own.
Loved for the living and the dead,
No other home I crave;
Here would I live till life be fled,
Here find a nameless grave.
