This wide world I have compassed round
Beheld each verdant state & shore
I have been where nought but the sullen sound
Was heard of oceans roar
Where boundless liquid plains were spread
Bright in the tropic solar beam
From the blue arch overhead
Rushed down a burning stream
Oh I have lain while twilights robe
Wraped the heavens & wraped the globe
Stretched on the deck for a lonely pillow
Listning the wind & the rolling billow
Watching each wavelet sink & rise
Neath the gold light of the evening skies
While whispered around me the Zephyr calm
Sweeter than music & softer than balm
Each breeze seemed the voice of a spir[i]t on high.
Speaking of peace in the tones of the sky
Some went past with rushing swell
Others more mild on the waters fell
Scarce heaving with their gentle breath
The rippling wavelets snowy wreath
Subsiding as the moon arose
& threw her light on their liquid snows
Which melted away & appeared again
Checked by the restless main
As if when they saw her silver beam
They loved to sport in the pearly gleam
A ceaseless murmur went up from the Ocean
Which told of his never ending motion
Of the waves that eternally roll & rage
caverns wage
Sinking & swelling
Like sea monster yelling
Unseen in tenebrious night
Loud roars the dull thunder
That old still surface under
Far hid from the regions of light
That fathomless tomb
That kingdom of gloom
Where darkness aye reigns in his night
& I have been on icy hill
Awe at the thought my soul doth fill
Unrivalled mid Alps it towers
Sternly its form o'er Gallia towers
Clad in robe of purest white
Radiant as the lunar light
Rearing its bald head on high
To a clear unclouded sky
Cold & chill imensity
Subject giants stand around
Wastes of snow its limits bound
Save where far below is seen
Golden fields & vineyards green
Ausonias's fruitful plains
Where all-giving Ceres reigns
O'er all the earth I've wandered long
In every land of every tongue
Now I come to my own loved home
Ne'er again from its bounds to roam
What though those I knew are dead
Though my kin from earth are fled
Yet the same woods & rills & trees
Murmur & sing in the same sweet breeze
& I can sit in the forest bower
& solace my heart with some wild flower
That looks from the green grassy ground
At the dead leaflets strewn around
Speaking thought voiceless & empty of sound
Bidding all gloomy care depart
Soothing the passions & calming the heart
Beheld each verdant state & shore
I have been where nought but the sullen sound
Was heard of oceans roar
Where boundless liquid plains were spread
Bright in the tropic solar beam
