From the wrecked train, the only passenger
Who had survived, it seemed, he slowly crawled;
And crouched on the embankment, looking down
Upon the burning heap with heart appalled.

And then he wondered, dizzily, if, perchance,
He were mistaken—and could hardly tell
Whether or no 'twas he who had been killed
And dropped into some smoking trench of Hell.
