If the worse comes to the worst
We can die but once , you said;
Then you ventured all and first
Took your place among the dead.
Sound you sleep, while I who dare
Venture naught but, quailing, stay
On the quag-edge of despair
Die a hundred deaths a day —
Die and live to die again:
Yet it's much to know that you
Did not venture all in vain,
That the worst you never knew.
We can die but once , you said;
Then you ventured all and first
Took your place among the dead.
Sound you sleep, while I who dare
Venture naught but, quailing, stay
On the quag-edge of despair
Die a hundred deaths a day —
Die and live to die again:
Yet it's much to know that you
Did not venture all in vain,
That the worst you never knew.
