In the middle of the night
He started up
At a cry from his sleeping Bride—
A bat from some ruin
In a heart he'd never searched,
Nay, hardly seen inside:

“Want me and take me
For the woman that I am
And not for her that died,
The lovely chit nineteen
I one time was,
And am no more,” she cried.
