The Respite

Above the graveyard hung the aeroplane;
Then suddenly nose-dived, as though the dead
Jealously sought to drag it down ... Again
It righted; and with roar exultant sped

Higher and higher through the living day,
As if the youthful pilot's heart were set
On flying to the sun: while the dead lay,
Muttering to themselves — Not yet, not yet!
