The silent taker of abuse
Not friendless proves when death, as still,
Takes him into the camp of truce
And beats the taps on good and ill;
Soldier, who did life's work fulfil,
However compromised by fame!
The sunny world respects thy end,
The states united speak thy name,
The soldiery thy grave attend,
And wives of gentles do the same,
To join thee to the beauteous mold
Who waits her bridegroom in that wood,
Where but the good denotes the bold,
And all of beauty is the good.
