Pieces of Coal -

Pieces of coal, hewn from the deeps of earth,
Here in my hand, spectra of lights retain;
Crystal on crystal knit, back in its birth —
Sun meeting sun again.

Shall I, when finished with this worldly pain —
When of the sleep of death I am partaker —
Shall I ascend from earth, a soul again,
To meet my Maker?

Pieces of coal, hewn from the deeps of earth,
Here in my hand, spectra of lights retain;
Crystal on crystal knit, back in its birth —
Sun meeting sun again.

Shall I, when finished with this worldly pain —
When of the sleep of death I am partaker —
Shall I ascend from earth, a soul again,
To meet my Maker?
