Paraphrase on the Psalms of David - Psalm 97

O EARTH ! joy in Jehovah's reign;
You num'rous isles, clasp'd by the main.
Him rolling clouds and shades infold;
Judgment and truth His throne uphold.
Who fiery darts before Him throws.
With winged flames consumes His foes.
His light'ning made a day of night,
Earth trembl'd at so fear'd a sight.
The mountains at His Presence sweat,
Like pliant wax dissolv'd with heat,
At His descension from the sky,
Who rules the world's great monarchy.
The heav'ns declare His righteousness,
His glory wond'ring men confess.
Let those with shame to hell descend,
Whose knees to cursed idols bend,
Who rocks for deities implore.
O all you gods our God adore.
Rejoicing Sion heard her King,
Her daughters of His judgments sing.
Thou art exalted above all
Mankind, and Pow'rs angelical.
Those saints Thy shady wings protect,
Who sin abhor, and Thee affect.
For Thou hast sown the seeds of light,
And joy, which shall invest th' upright.
You just, your joyful hearts elate,
His blest memorial celebrate.
