Apparelled as a Paynim in pilgrim's wise
He bare a bordon bound with a broad list
Like a withe-wind-weed wounden about.
A bowl and a bag he bare by his side,
A hundred phials on his hat sit,
Signs of Syse and shells of Galicia
And many a Cross on his cloak and Keys of Rome,
And the Vernicle before for men should know
And see by his signs whom he had sought.
This folk frayned him first from whence he come?
“From Sinai,” he said, “and from our Lord's Sepulchre;
In Bethlehem, in Babylon, I have been both;
In Armenia, in Alexandria, and in Damask.
Ye may see by my signs that sit on my cap,
I have sought good Saints for my soul's health,
And walked full wide in wet and in dry.”
