When the swift Hours had Darkness chas'd away,
When Sol his beamy Locks had spread,
And Jove arose from his ambrosial Bed,
To celebrate that happy Day,
In which he was redeem'd from being Saturn's Prey.
'Twas on that solemn Festival,
The Thund'rer in a Study sate,
Revolving in his Mind the Turns of Fate;
And bid the witty Hermes call
The subalternate Deities,
Into his Council Hall,
First Jove, and Juno, in the Midst were plac'd;
Their Seats like eastern Monarchs rais'd,
Then He that guides the rowling Tear,
And She, who rules the Lunar Sphere:
Grey Neptune, who the Trident bears
And Mars, who raises mortal Wars.
Pallas, with Æis on her Breast,
And Mercury, with feather'd Crest:
Venue, whom myrtle Boughs entwine,
And Baccus shaded with the Vine:
Cybil, with mural Chaplet crown'd,
And foe, who fructifies the Ground.
Then with an awful Motion of his Hand,
Which did both Silence and Respect command,
Fore still'd their Noise, then smooth'd his radiant Face,
And thus explain'd their Meeting with expressive Grace.
