Ode to General Taylor

Oh ! bid Apollo strike the lyre!
Sons of Columbia, wake to song!
Let Taylor's name each breast inspire,
And loud the pealing notes prolong.
TOhim, who on the battle plain
Sent to each foeman's heart dismay,
We dedicate each lofty strain,
The hero brave of Monterey.

Yes, let the trumpet tongue of fame
Tell of the deeds by Taylor done;
A nation's honors crown his name,
The honors he hath justly won.
Let others seek — they cannot win
One laurel from his brow away;
We'll twine our wreaths alone for him
Who fought so brave at Monterey.
