The moon is soft arising
Behind its lattice far,
Serene the air surprising
As where holy spirits are.
Calm is the sea untroubled,
And calm the azure skies.
Lord,—when at peace of evening
Our soul to seek Thee flies
To tell to Thee our sorrows,—
Oh, what despairing morrows,
If nought to us replies!—
