I.

Tonight the surf gleams with a thousand fires,
Lost fragments of an ancient moon
That fell into the sea long, long ago,
Down through a night of some forgotten June.

While sea and sky their vigil keep,
With solemn litany of wind and surge
Deep calling unto everlasting deep.
