O siren out at sea

You can smile, you can sing,

But don’t be fooled looks deceive.

Listen.Take it from me,

Sirens have no power over queens.

Your sweet voice of seductive melodies

Might wrap ‘round other men’s eyes,

Like a ribbon of lies.

But me, I’m a different breed.

Look at that bit of seaweed

Caught in your hair,

Those pearls glinting on both ears,

And the way you wear your fins

Like a formless dress.

You’re a dolled up beast at best.

True, looks aren’t everything.

I don’t intend to be mean, but

I’m more of a woman than you’ll ever be.

Under this god-given uniform,

Under this man-skin,

I am the woman within.

I am a woman of blood

But not of flesh.

I am a woman in spirit—

Who’d have guessed?

Don’t take it so hard,

I was just sailing on by.

Don’t let my passing break your heart.

Don’t let me bring a tear to your eye.

I don’t know how to say it more plainly:

You’re not my cup of tea, ocean lady.

I’m a queen who’s waiting for her king.

Come now, baby, don’t start to cry.

Don’t you have plenty of handsome men

Down beneath the waves, asleep,

In your gallery of graves?

Look.—I’m already gone.

I’m floating off like a dream.

Give it a week, and it’ll be

Like you never even wanted me.
