Year
You are living schoolchildren's dreams,
after the seemingly endless NASA training,
your time arrives,
she rumbles beneath you,
gathering all her strength-
shaking, roaring like thunderous lions,
lifting,
you feel faint in elation,
the piercing cold Cape Canaveral sky
turned deep azure, then, black,
the earth is blue and green swirls
like an artist's paints mixing
into the most beauteous of
colors and form.
Your eyes adjusting to the
bright flash of the sun,
as the moon, like a shy girl,
regal in her mystery, then,
you and your fellow astronauts
saw them, these beings,
they are tall, with blue-white
wings outspread and expansive,
so much beauty, and so benign,
you and your crew felt no threat.
Then, suddenly, you realized-
they're angels hovering, curious,
male and female with long
and shimmering hair,
in flowing garments edged
with golden hues,
more in majesty than even
your man-made ship of the stars,
in you and your crew's
transfixed eyes and psyches-
is the feeling, the acceptance,
that science has United with God.
