A Marriage in Belmont

1

Sometimes we would walk
into the cobalt-blue TV,
take off our clothes,
and hang upside down like bats.

Then we would watch
from the spindled elm leaves
where names are sealed
with sap and nail polish.

Fascinated we would watch.

2

The Airedale slipped
his long leash of dog
and the cat curled into herself
like night in a dream

but what are those cries?

3

— Darling, they are the children
riding their wide-tired bicycles
with great care through the geraniums
we suffered so to plant.

— Darling, they are you and I
making love in a glass box
lest we find ourselves
alone and voiceless in the fire.
