I said, “To make it small,
One question sums them all:
If You are God and King
Unchallenged in Your place:
If You are kindness furled
In all-power: if You care
At all, how could You bear
To make a cruel world?”

I asked God to His face,
“How could You do that thing?
That answers all the rest.”
God cast His eyes on me,
Then turned into a tree
And said, “Come build your nest.”
