And things would never be the same
Again betwixt them, since his heart,
As he had kissed her in the game,
Had felt a sudden surge of flame.

They'd played, since ever he could mind,
So happily as boy and girl —
And then, so suddenly, to find
That he had been both dull and blind!

And now she seemed to him a strange
And unknown lass — a woman grown
Remote and wellnigh out of range,
Since that chance kiss had wrought the change
