ON HEARING Cannon FROM THE OPPOSITE C OAST .

W HAT are these puffs and vapouring sounds,
The giant's voice that man confounds?
'Tis man himself; 'tis at the best
A Tyrant by his minions dress'd.
And is it for this cherish'd weed
That legions form, and myriads bleed?
Arise, avenging Freedom's birth!
And chase these terrors from the earth!
