Es ragt ins Meer der Runenstein

The runic stone juts into the sea;
I sit beside it, dreaming.
The sea-gulls cry, the waves run free,
The wind is whistling and screaming.

Many have been beloved by me,
Many I thought were unfailing.
Where are they now? . . . The waves run free;
The wind is whistling and wailing.
