He heard them pause outside;
And rose, and tiptoed to the door, and listened;
And, as he hearkened there, his white face glistened,
And his thin lips grinned wide.

Brooding like some ill fate,
He hearkened to the happy lovers, chaffing;
Then, as they passed downstairs together, laughing —
You wait! he gasped, You wait!
