He always banged the door as he went out:
And I would curse him fretfully,
As through my aching head the sudden bang
Reverberated, and its echoes rang
Down hollow corridors with clang on clang.

He always banged the door as he went out,
Until to-day, when he went quietly,
Borne shoulder-high; and, as they closed the door
Behind him noiselessly, my heart longed sore
To hear him bang it carelessly once more.
