The earth is untroubled
And purely designed;
Its beauty is doubled
By a noble mind.

The wonder and homage
Of such is a pool
Wherein a true image
Hangs cleanly and cool.

So washed and immersèd
The trees and the grass
Float in crystal, reversèd
As in a clear glass.

But alas for the mirror
Of a wicked brain
Where the shape of error
Hangs staring and plain!

In the mind of the wicked
The earth is not good;
The trees are naked,
And the seas are blood.

Close your eyes, bind them
With a white kerchief;
Cover them, blind them
With a broad green leaf.

Or turn them sunward
To dazzle them blind,
But never look downward
Through a wicked mind.
