Come, so the spirit's fragrance That I may retrace from that cheek;
Come, that I may discover My lost heart's place from that cheek,

Ask thou the explanation Of that which they tell in books
Of the charms of the heavenly Houris, Their beauty and grace, from that cheek.

The form of the haughty cypress Is left in the dust by that shape;
The rose of the rose-garth shrinketh, In sheer amaze, from that cheek.

The jessamine shamed abideth By reason of those her limbs;
The heart of the Redbud goeth In bloody case from that cheek.

The musk-pod of China taketh Its fragrant scent from that curl;
The odours of Paradise gaineth Rosewater base from that cheek.

The sun of the sky for envy's Asweat of the sun of thy face;
The moon up aloft's grown meagre And pallid of face from thy cheek.

The water of life distilleth From Hafiz' heart-charming verse,
As souls, into sweat resolvéd, Do trickle apace from that cheek.
