A patient brute was Balaam's Ass;
He shook his ears, & ate his grass,
And when he bore his Master's weight,
Complain'd not of the will of Fate.

And Balaam to his Ass was tied
By gratitude and love beside:
Till arrogance beset his soul
And held his spirit in controul.
