An admonition I make thee: Give ear nor except thereto.
Nay, all that the kind adviser Shall tell thee accept for true.
Thine easance of lovelings faces Enjoy thou, whilst yet thou mayst;
For th' old world's perfidy ambushed Still lieth for life perdue.
The goods of both worlds to lovers Are but as a barleycorn;
For these are of little value And those are o'er dear to woo.
Nought else but a pleasant comrade And ghittern in tune I crave;
My pain so to tell, the wailing Of treble and bass unto.
If but with my wish accordant Were that which is foreordained,
Nor wine would I drink henceforward Nor aught that is sin would do.
The cup with intent of repentance I've put by an hundred times;
But the cupbearer never a moment The spell of her glance withdrew.
God wot, this for me sufficeth Of commerce with old and young;
A loveling of fourteen summers And wine that hath lived for two.
Since They, without our accordance, Foreordered our earthly lot,
If somewhat in us blameworthy Show, make not withal ado.
Come, into my cup like the tulip Pour, cupbearer, wine of musk,
So haply the mole of the Loved One Go not from my spirit's view.
O heart, said I not to thee rightly. " Beware of her ebon tress? "
For see how They even the breezes In chains in this ring enmew.
The goblet, with pearls and rubies Thick-jewelled, bring and say,
" Look, look on this Asefi bounty And die! " to the envious crew.
Drink wine, man, and strive for union With her whom thou lovest. List
To that which to thee the angels Cry from yon dome of blue.
Our runaway heart who holdeth? Proclaim ye the madman 'scaped
From prison, that they may take him And clap him in chains anew.
Since sweeter are Hafiz' verses Than even Zehir's sweet verse,
What room for Selman's discoursements And verses of Sheikh Khwajou?
Nay, in this banquet, Hafiz, Name not repentance; lest
The bow-eyebrowed cupbearer smite thee With glances through and through.
