As one was doomed to bear
The pang of parting, maybe it was well,
Mother, that on thy son the burden fell;
Thou wouldst have had no strength to face despair.

Thou in that other world mayest see
So many things that lighten pain:
But here I bear—I bear for thee—
The unalloyed deep grief that would have slain.
