Suddenly the drums of the rain are beating,
Over the hills her shining banner comes;
Swiftly the enemy drought is retreating—
Scared by insistent drums.
Painfully and long has the veld been battered,
Smitten and scourged by devils of drought,
Sweepingly the stubborn foe is shattered,
Rain has put him to rout.
Suddenly comes rain with his shining legions,
(Will love come so, bringing peace to earth?)
Suddenly long blasted and barren regions
Wake to the wonder of birth.
