Part One:

A forest

peak to mountain peak

of scented pine

~~

The needles drop

one by one:

your eyes in sepia

~~

Where’s the water

beneath the pines?

The droplets lost in time

~~

Sap ran low

in frozen snow:

a cold wind blows

~~

When did I pine?

A breathless touch

a chilling draft

~~

Your petals fluttered

down to rest

on needles dry

~~

Branches wrap

around the scarecrow:

a distant leaf unfurls

Part Two:

Crimson leaves

outshine the withered pines

in autumn time

~~

Shall I be a pine

or a searching vine?

The bed’s entwined

~~

Beneath the pine

the wild rose was white

and ripe for plucking

~~

Peeking in the pine

you seep through needles

to find the core

Epilogue:

Just remember:

when all is lost in sorrow

it seems there’s no tomorrow

but there’s always ice cream somewhere to “borrow”

Note: written for the Haiku Heights 5/19/12 prompt, “PINE.” These were all written in free style modern haiku in terms of the syllable break, but all except the epilogue were within 17 syllables total.
