Commentary
The poem works well as a literal interpretation of a beautiful snowfall on Mount Yoshino in spring while the humid mists are rising elsewhere. Because of the double-meaning possible in “tateru” (severing/cutting-off/finding oneself in a difficult situation) and “mi” (body/beautiful), the reader could symbolically read the poem as longing for an unattainable beauty, in the same way that one could admire from a distance the beautiful snowfall on Mount Yoshino while living in the springtime humidity.
