New Moon, 1

I

New moon, he said — the first
I've ever seen through glass:
Well, let us hope the worst
Won't come to pass.

A wheen new moons I've seen,
For I am ninety-three,
And never aught between
The moon and me.

She's bonnie still, said he ,
Though something sharp and cold.
We'll see what we shall see
When she is old.
