Cato Utican, Who Slew Himself Because He Would Not Fall into Caesar's Hands
WHO SLEW HIMSELF BECAUSE HE WOULD NOT FALL INTO CÆSAR'S HANDS .
Caesar, thou hast o'ercome, to thy great fame,
Proud Germans, valiant Gauls, and Britons rude,
Rome's liberty (but to thine eternal shame)
And her great champion thou hast eke subdued.
Yet neither shall thy triumphs with my name
Be graced, nor sword be with my blood imbrued:
Though all the conquered earth do now serve thee,
Cato will die unconquered and free!
