Fruition

(to Marie)

A little brown face — a long silken curl
Tied with a ribbon of blue,
A look of wonder in soft, brown eyes
With the love-light shining thru'.

Ah! the vision is stamped indelibly,
Sweetly clear in my memory now;
I remember the smile on the little brown face
I remember the childish " vow. "

O, the comfort and cheer it gave that day
And the spoken words rang true, —
" Don't worry, for I will soon grow up
And I'll be a help to you. "

A help? why you've been far more than that,
You are making Life easy and bright,
Peace flows within, the gloom has passed,
And, at " even-tide " — it's " light. "

A little brown face — a long silken curl
Tied with a ribbon of blue,
And the childish " vow " has been faithfully kept
And the love-light still shines thru'.
