Exciting Times

Harold Wilson was Prime Minister
And Heath Leader of the Opposition.

These are exciting times to drive,
Fit, love, and alter in.

I dropped from top into third gear
And rounded the corner cautiously
But a lorry spiraled towards me
On fire on my side of the road
(an orange prostitute drank sherry)
Obviously completely out of control.

I had to wait at the traffic lights ÔÇô
Ten to eleven ÔÇô just time for a ÔÇô
Green ÔÇô I started slowly
But suddenly a bus frowned down on me,
The driver purple with invective
Under his helmet. Callaghan was then
Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Jay
President of the Board of Trade.

What if the sun had its origin
Five thousand million years ago?
What if Homer and Jesus
Lived only a fraction of that time ago
(he left the pickaxe in the bath)
And won't be heard of when the sun
Is a little older in a million years?

An enormous truck skidded at me
Sideways on the ice: we are small
Soft upright animals groping and
weaving on a small rotating ball
Most of it molten metal (still will
Be in a million years from now),
Its massive load about to crash
Into my car on the motorway
(these are exciting times for poetry).

It regained control. George Brown
Was Minister for Economic Affairs.
