King Conor's Song to Deirdre
Were I mere spindrift of the salt sea spray
That ever dared thy wild-rose cheek to flout,
Or raindrop that the wild winds caught and tossed
'Gainst thy brave face, uplift toward the storm,
Then would I foam with joy from cape to cape,
And roam the windy firmament — content,
Remembering!
Were I the loneliest star in space whose light
After long flight of ages found thine eyes,
Or the low winter sun, forlorn and wan,
That paled thy beauty for a moment's space,
Then would I wander happy through the wild,
Or sink down into night and death — content,
Remembering!
Alas, I am but human spray and rain
That dare not touch thee, distant as a star
Unseen of thee, and wan as winter's sun
That may but look upon thy face afar:
Yet rain and spray will roam the homeless world,
And sun and star be lost in night — content,
That ever dared thy wild-rose cheek to flout,
Or raindrop that the wild winds caught and tossed
