Night and the Lamp

O Lamp and holy Night,
We summoned none but you
To chronicle aright
Our troth and promise true!

" I 'll love thee, " so she swore,
And I, " I will not quit
Thee, dear, for evermore, "
You heard and treasured it!

Now, Night, she doth protest
Her oath was for the day,
And, Lamp, thou knowest best
How mine she laughs away!
