In Every City I Seek Thee

In every city I seek thee, Zaida.
In every language I praise thee.
My heart holds thee, the one.

As the true believer seeks the truth of Allah
From mosque to mosque,
So, vainly, do I seek the like of thy face
From bazaar to bazaar.

I care not if thou be Shiite or Sunnite.
For Heresy and Orthodoxy stand both behind
The screen of thy beauty.

Orthodoxy to the Orthodox!
Heresy to the Heretic!
But to me, being a wise priest, the scent of thy body,
The touch of thy mouth that sucks the soul away!
