The Pious Pawn

“I want to be good! I know that I should!”
The little white pawn aspired;
“I try my best to outdo the rest
In conduct to be desired.
I stand quite straight, I patiently wait,
I keep to my own little square,
And I try to submit, when I'm taken from it,
In hopes of a Heaven most fair.”

The behavior you boast is that of a post!
You may shine in your permanent groove,
But virtue in chess you will have to confess,
Involves some discretion to move!
Your hopes may come true of that heaven in view,
And again they may not—it's a guess!
But to be good, my dear, for anything here
You have to know how to play chess!
