The Linnet and the Jay

Mona, by nature formed a jay,
Observed a little linnet
Warbling melodious on a spray,
Like Handel on his spinnet.

Attentive, she resolved each note;
And, ere the season ended,
As much improved her tuneless throat
As nature could be mended.

Lin silent heard, but Poll, rejoiced,
Exerts his clumsy tongue
To praise a jay so heav'nly voiced,
And pity Lin outsung!

Lin smiled and sighed, " My little lays
Are native, artless, few;
Content, I quit all higher praise
To Mona and to you. "
