Your Gift

Until you came I saw but shadows tragic—
Dull, blackened wastes, dark, lowering skies at night,
But when you passed, with some unconscious magic,
You changed those shadows into joyous light.
The ripple of your laugh—your wise young eyes—
Showed me a fleeting glimpse of Paradise!

Until you came, the hopes that should have bound me
True to ideals were drowned in seas of Doubt;
I could not see the stars before you found me,
While Love was but a thing to jest about.
But now! Your hand in mine, the whole world seems
Made new again.…You gave me back my dreams!
